Nick trained at Cambridge University and in London before moving to Melbourne in 1988. He wrote his master’s thesis on antibiotic prescribing and has sat on numerous committees and writing groups dealing with appropriate medication use.
Nick is an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Melbourne University, and continues to teach students and young doctors, and give talks on a wide variety of health topics.
Nick was one of the first GPs in Victoria trained to provide Voluntary Assisted Dying care (VAD) care and is happy to take referrals for this. He is a Board member of Dying with Dignity Victoria.
Nick has extensive media experience. For 3 years he presented health stories on ABC television with Jill Singer and George Negus (sadly now both deceased), and subsequently did a weekly radio segment with Steve Vizard (still going in 2024). He can often be heard on RRR radio on Sunday mornings (102.7 FM, “Radiotherapy”, 10-11 am), and Tuesday evenings on ABC Radio Melbourne (774 AM, with David Astle, he of the impossible crossword fame. “Writs and Cures”, 8-8.30 pm). He was also to be found every Friday and Sunday on TV, hosting Channel 7’s House of Wellness, until that show's sudden axing in November 2024.
Nick received the inaugural Division award for ‘significant contribution to General Practice in 1998, and Melbourne University’s Outstanding GP Term Teacher award in 2018.
Nick’s first book, “What Happens Now? The essential book for first-time fathers” was published by ACER in 2012. Sadly it is now sold out, so you’ll have to go to the library or scour the second-hand shops.
